Description:
With great enthusiasm and exuberance St. Joseph’s College, Nainital held its 131st Annual Athletic Sports and Drill Display on Friday, May 17, 2019.
The chief guest for the event was Brig G. S. Rathore, Commandant, Kumaon Regimental Centre, Ranikhet. Among the other guests, there were Principals of various schools and colleges, Christian Brothers, priests, nuns, ex-pupils, parents and friends.
The Sports Day began off with the Captains’ March followed by the 4 Houses (Nehru, Tagore, Pant and Gandhi) led by their vice captains. The synchronized swing of arms and the sound of thudding feet evoked a sense of dignity and pride in all.
Among the athletic events held, there were finals of several races across all divisions. Inter-school relays for boys and girls were well participated by the neighbourhood schools. There were even two teams from the ex-pupils that enhanced the spirit of the occasion. But, the main attraction was the Tug of War between the past and the present pupils in which our youngsters narrowly managed to win.
After the athletics, it was time for the drills display.
Our fit-as-a-fiddle boys performed breath-taking gymnastic manoeuvres that made the audience to sit on the edge of their seats.
Classes 9-12, through their spectacularly poignant drill, honoured Major Rajesh Singh Adhikari (ex-student) martyred in the Kargil war of 1999, and all our armed forces, that have and are serving our nation selflessly.
Classes 6-8 highlighted the evil of child labour and called for soul-searching in all of us.
While classes 4 and 5 displayed their perseverance and coordination through human pyramids, classes 1, 2 and 3 did it through precise crashing of dumbbells.
After the drill display, the President of the Old Boys Association announced scholarships to the two toppers of ICSE (Aayan Raj Bajaj – 95.5% and Abhijeet Lodhiyal – 95%). He urged more ex-pupils to join the association and actively participate in contributing to the school and society.
After an introduction, by the Middle-School Coordinator, Mr Edwin D Gama, the Chief Guest, Brig. G. S. Rathore addressed the gathering congratulating each and every one for their hard work and commitment, and honoured the winners with trophies.
Gandhi House won the price for best march past and Pant House was the overall champions.
The Programme concluded with a vote of thanks by the Principal, Br Hector Pinto and with singing of the school and the national anthems.
